As soon as you think about writing a eulogy, it’s natural to be a little apprehensive at first and to wonder about the best way of doing things.

Speaking to you as someone who has written, advised on and delivered over 100 eulogies, there is one key principle which – if you let it guide you – will make your eulogy the best it can be.

And that is, to speak from your heart. This may sound too simple, but it is without doubt the most important thing. Often as human beings we try to say the “right thing”, we worry about what other people will think, and we imagine that there is some “proper” or “perfect” way of doing things, and if only we could work out what it is, everything would be alright.

Whereas what really makes for a compelling speech – and a compelling speaker – is being open, honest and authentic. What really works is speaking with feeling, and saying what you really want to say.

Of course there are some exceptions to this. For instance, if you didn’t like the person you are speaking about, you’d probably want to be respectful and appropriate and say something like, “Over the years, we sometimes had our differences.” But when it comes to the positives of love, shared experiences, what someone has meant to you and others, speaking from your heart in the eulogy is definitely the best way to go.
